If you start collecting stamps you will need a catalog. This is so that you can identify the stamps that you own and/or find, as well as list the stamps you want.
In the United States, the leading stamp catalog is the Scotts Catalog - this amazing body of works catalogs virtually every legitimate stamp ever produced. The 'Foreign' set of catalogs is now up to six individual catalog volumes. Their specialized US catalog is a single volume and very worthwhile owning is you are collecting US stamps.
If yu are just starting out or on a budget, these catalogs are available in libraries, and also consider getting a used catalog. A several year old catalog will contain all but the stamps produced over the past several years - valid reference material.
